THE IMPORTANCE OF EATING TOGETHER WITH FAMILY

Nowadays, each member of family has his or her own businesses, making it harder for family to get together. In the morning, everybody is busy preparing activities. By noon, children are in the school while parents are still busy working. At night, parents sometimes go home very late after dinner time. Although technology helps a lot in communications, physical meeting certainly brings different meaning compared to communicating using only mobile phone screen and sound.
The culture of eating meals together as a family begins to disappear from our daily life. While in fact many researches showed the benefits of sharing meals together with family, mainly for children’s growth. Here are some of the benefits:
- Better nutrition
Many researches showed that the level of nutrition in family that had dinner routine was higher, therefore family members had less risks of catching various diseases and hereditary obesity. Children and parents would eat more vegetables and in that way consumed more vitamin and nutrition.
- Children have better performance in school
According to a 2005 research at the Columbia University, teenagers who eat meals with family for at least five times a week were more likely to get better grade in school. Children who eat with family also had more positive attitudes regarding their future.
- Enhancing communication
Having dinner with family provides a chance for communication. Chatting over dinner gives opportunity for family to build family bonding and to connect with each other.
- Develop social skill
Having meals together help children to develop social skills. They learn to be good listeners and be patient while other people talk. They become curious about other people, not only focusing on themselves.

Having meals together is a good opportunity for parents to teach children about table manner etiquette.

According to a research by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, members of family who didn’t have dinner routine were 3.5 times more prone to misuse of prescription drugs and similar acts.

Having dinner together strengthens family bonding. Children can use dinner times to talk about important matters. It’s also advantageous for children’s growth, particularly when they have to face difficult problems in their teenager years.
- More thrifty
Buying food outside is certainly more costly than preparing food at home. In the long run, eating together at home is an economical act.
- Increase children’s taste of food
Eating together means cooking general meals for the entire family. This way, children are introduced to new foods and are not fretful about food choices.
- Learn about structure and routines
Routines help children organize themselves and find steadiness in family life. Regular eating routines with family make children feel relaxed and discontented because they can enjoy such moments every day.
It turns out that there are so many advantages in eating together with family. If you rarely do it, make time immediately to organize such routines for at least twice a week. Make sure all members of family are present and the routines become family moments that are worth waiting for.
