Image Left Turn Rules That Drivers Should Understand

On the highway, safety and smooth traffic are the main things. One important aspect to realize this is understanding and obeying traffic regulations, including the rules regarding direct left turns.

Please note that the direct left turn rules have changed. Unlike the previous regulations that allowed direct left turns without stopping, now this is no longer generally permitted. Let's learn the direct left turn rules, the sanctions for violations, and the negative impacts that can arise.

Is it possible to Turn Left Straight Away?

Previously, vehicles were allowed to turn left directly at intersections in accordance with LLAJ Law Number 14 of 1992. This regulation stated that turning left at intersections could be done without stopping, unless there were signs stating otherwise. However, this regulation is no longer in effect.

The regulation on turning left directly has now been replaced and regulated in Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transportation (LLAJ Law). Article 112 Paragraph (33) of the LLAJ Law states that at intersections equipped with Traffic Signal Devices (APILL), vehicle drivers are prohibited from turning left directly, unless otherwise specified by the APILL.

This means that drivers are required to comply with applicable traffic regulations. Turning left directly is not permitted without a “turn left directly” or “turn left continue” sign.

Problems that Arise if You Turn Straight Left

Disrupting Traffic Flow from the Right

Turning left directly without paying attention to traffic signs or traffic signal devices (APILL) can disrupt traffic flow from the right. At busy intersections, drivers who turn left directly can block vehicles from the right that have priority based on traffic light signals.

Increasing the Risk of Accidents

Turning left directly without paying attention to traffic conditions and existing signs can cause confusion and clashes between drivers, and increase the risk of accidents because drivers from the right may not anticipate vehicles turning left without stopping. In addition, pedestrians who are crossing the road at intersections can also be affected by drivers who do not stop according to traffic signals.

Causing Congestion

When drivers decide to turn left directly without paying attention to traffic signals, this can cause congestion, especially at busy intersections. Other drivers may have to stop suddenly or change lanes to avoid collisions, which can slow down the overall flow of traffic. This can cause vehicle build-up and worsen congestion around the intersection.

Penalties If Drivers Break the Rules

For those who dare to break traffic signs, there are consequences to face. In accordance with Law No. 29 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transportation, Article 287, Paragraph 1, states that traffic violators will be subject to sanctions. In this article, every driver who is proven to have violated the rules will be subject to a maximum imprisonment of 2 months or a fine of up to IDR 500,000.

Understanding and obeying the direct left turn rule is very important for road safety. Remember to always pay attention to traffic signs and markings, and use the turn signal correctly when turning. By understanding this, it is hoped that you can drive more safely, responsibly, and disciplined to create a positive traffic culture.
